Sizes

The dimensions of a microwave oven vary, but not by much. For example, a compact microwave is around eighteen inches in width, whereas a large microwave is over twenty two inches in width.

  1. Compact - 18-20 inches in width, 14 inches deep, 12 inches in height.
  2. Medium - 20-22 inches in width, 16 inches deep, 12+ inches in height.
  3. Large - 22-26 inches in width, 18+ inches deep, 12+ inches in height.
  4. Built-in - sizes vary to fit within a customised fitted kitchen.

The advantage of a large microwave is it's capacity to cook more, and also the added room to place more circuitry, which provide advanced features likes 'Chaos defrost'.

Compact microwaves on the other hand are usually cheaper, and are suitable for small apartments and dormitories.

While there are no standardised sizes for microwaves. The size categories can be simplified further, into just,

  1. Compact size
  2. Family size

The family sized microwave is designed for purposes such as a Sunday lunch. With a combination oven, it is possible to cook a Sunday roast chicken or a turkey.

Or, in the mad dash to cook the potatoes, vegetables, gravy and meat for the same time, a large microwave turntable can accommodate more than one dish.

The built-in microwave oven can come in any size. They are designed to fit into a kitchen cabinet, and are sometimes painted to match the colour of the cabinets.

A built-in microwave may have to be fitted by an engineer, because, an exhaust fan may need to be installed to extract fumes, heat and odors.
